Think about the photographs you treasure most. Chances are they aren’t perfect. They’re the ones that make you smile, or catch your breath, because they take you straight back to a moment, a place, a person.
That’s the real power of a family photograph. It’s a record of who you were, who you were with, and how it felt to be together at that point in your lives.
Photographs tell your family’s story
A good family portrait does more than show what everyone looked like. It captures the relationships
They’re something to hold on to
So many of our photos now live on phones and are rarely looked at again. A professionally taken family portrait, printed and displayed on your wall or gathered in an album, becomes part of your home. It’s a daily reminder of what matters most, and something that can be passed down.
Why I only photograph outdoors
I work exclusively outdoors, and that’s a deliberate choice. A studio backdrop looks much the same whoever is standing in front of it. The outdoors is different. Natural light changes through the day and the seasons, and every location has its own character, so no two sessions are ever alike.
Being outside also helps people relax. Children can run, explore and be themselves instead of being asked to sit still under studio lights. Parents loosen up, grandparents join in, and the dog can come along too. The result is natural, unforced portraits full of genuine expressions and real connection, with a setting that is unique to you and your family.
Don’t wait for the “perfect” time
Many families put off having photographs taken until the children are a bit older, the house is finished, or everyone is looking their best. But the right time is now, as you are. These days won’t come around again, and you’ll be glad you made the time to capture them.
If you’d like beautiful, natural family portraits taken outdoors, I’d love to hear from you. Get in touch to talk about your ideas and find a time that suits your family.
